The journey through iconic furniture pieces typically begins in the early 20th century, where the shift towards modernism influenced the creation of designs that prioritize both form and function. Designers like Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames devised furniture that combined aesthetic simplicity with sophisticated design techniques. For instance, the Eames Lounge Chair, born in the mid-20th century, remains a symbol of luxury and comfort. Its plywood frame and leather upholstery embody modernist design principles while ensuring a timeless look.

           The Chesterfield Sofa

Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, this chair is a masterclass in minimalist design.

Isamu Noguchi designed this iconic table in the mid-20th century, featuring a unique organic shape that combines art and furniture. Its glass top and intertwined wooden base make it a striking addition to any modern interior. In a luxury Dallas residence, this coffee table can act as a unifying element of design that brings together various components of a room.

Integrating Iconic Furniture into Dallas Interiors

When incorporating these iconic pieces into Dallas interiors, it is vital to consider the overall design theme and the role each piece plays within the space. Iconic furniture should not only comply with the aesthetic but also enhance the functionality of the area. For instance, in a luxury retail setting in Dallas, the Barcelona Chair can be strategically placed to provide a luxurious seating option that also serves as a highlight of the store’s interior design.

           Creating a Focal Point

One effective strategy is to use iconic furniture as the focal point of a room. Given their distinctive designs, these pieces naturally draw attention. Positioning a Chesterfield sofa in the living room, highlighted by contemporary art pieces and elegant lighting, can transform it into a captivating centerpiece.

           Complementing with Modern Elements

While iconic furniture stands out on its own, pairing it with modern elements can ensure it blends harmoniously with contemporary interiors. For instance, surrounding a Noguchi Coffee Table with sleek, modern sofas and ambient lighting can enhance its visual appeal, making it a modern yet timeless addition to any living space.

           Balancing Aesthetics and Comfort

In luxury interiors, comfort is just as important as aesthetics. It is essential to balance the visual impact of iconic furniture with ergonomic and comfortable design choices. This ensures that the space is not only visually appealing but also livable and inviting.

Luxury textiles play a pivotal role in the crafting of exquisite, high-end interior environments, particularly in cosmopolitan areas like Dallas where style and lavishness go hand in hand. The choice of fabric in an upscale setting does more than merely serve a functional purpose; it elevates the aesthetic, acting as a subtle yet powerful communicator of luxury and taste. Understanding the qualities and applications of various high-end textiles can profoundly affect the ambiance of a space, making selection a critical element of the design process.

           The Lustrous Appeal of Silk

Silk, with its inherent sheen and smooth texture, has long been associated with luxury and sophistication. When used in interior design, silk draperies not only enhance the visual appeal of a room but also play with light in enchanting ways. The gentle shimmer of silk curtains can soften the entry of natural light, creating a warm, welcoming glow that adds depth and character. Moreover, silk can be dyed in any color, providing endless opportunities to match or contrast with an interior color scheme. However, its delicate nature requires careful handling and maintenance, including protection from the sun to avoid fading and deterioration over time.

           The Richness of Velvet

Velvet's dense pile and deep color saturation make it an ideal choice for settings that aim to evoke a sense of warmth and comfort. Often favored in both traditional and contemporary settings, velvet upholstery is particularly beloved for furniture pieces like sofas, armchairs, and headboards. Its plush feel not only invites relaxation but also contributes an element of tactile luxury that is visually pleasing. In luxury design, velvet works well in rich, jewel tones such as emerald, sapphire, and amethyst, which project an air of regal opulence and draw the eye with their vibrant allure.

           The Rustic Elegance of Linen

While linen might not immediately come to mind when thinking of luxury, its relaxed elegance makes it a favorite among designers who strive for a look that is both luxurious and understated. Linen upholstery is highly valued in hot climates due to its breathability and natural cooling properties. Its typical light and natural hues lend a serene and airy feel to interiors, ideal for spaces designed to be calming retreats from the bustling outside world. In addition, the slight, inherent creases in linen fabric add a touch of informality, which can help balance more opulent elements within a room, creating a space that feels luxurious yet livable.

           The Traditional Sophistication of Wool

Wool textiles are renowned not only for their durability but also for their aesthetic versatility. Wool can be woven into a vast array of textures and patterns, from thick, comforting weaves suitable for area rugs or throw blankets to finely tailored upholstery materials that exude classic elegance. Wool's natural fire resistance and sound-dampening properties make it a practical choice for luxury settings, where both safety and comfort are paramount. Additionally, its ability to retain dye makes it excellent for vibrant, intricately patterned designs that can serve as focal points or subtly enhance the decor.

           Synthetic and Blended Fabrics

The advent of synthetic fibers has introduced additional versatility and resilience to the palette of luxury textiles. Materials like microfiber and acrylic offer increased stain resistance and durability, essential for high-traffic areas or homes with children and pets. When blended with natural fibers, synthetics can help extend the life of fabrics while maintaining their luxurious feel and appearance. These blends are perfect for those who desire the aesthetic of luxury textiles but need more practical solutions for their lifestyles.

           Incorporating Textiles into Luxury Interiors

The key to effectively incorporating these textiles into luxury interiors lies in understanding their individual characteristics and best uses. Designers must consider not only the visual impact of a textile but also its tactile qualities and functional benefits. For instance, a silk-covered pillow can add a touch of elegance to a leather sofa, while a wool throw might provide warmth and texture to a linen-covered lounger. The choice of materials should align with the lifestyle of the household, ensuring that the design is as practical as it is beautiful.

           Maintaining Luxury Textiles

Maintenance is crucial in preserving the beauty and integrity of high-end textiles. Regular professional cleaning, immediate attention to spills, and avoidance of direct sunlight are essential steps in caring for delicate fabrics like silk and linen. For more durable materials like wool and synthetic blends, regular vacuuming and occasional deep cleaning will help maintain their appearance over time. Investing in proper care ensures that these textiles remain as luxurious as the day they were installed, contributing to the overall allure and value of the interior.

Luxury textiles are much more than mere decorations; they are fundamental components that contribute to the narrative of luxury and comfort in high-end design. Whether through the opulent sheen of silk, the inviting depth of velvet, or the cool elegance of linen, these materials can define spaces, influencing both the look and the feel of the environment. With thoughtful selection and meticulous care, they create interiors that not only exude opulence but also offer a warm welcome, illustrating the true potential of luxury design.

Dallas, with its affinity for opulence, has been at the forefront of embracing these innovations, integrating technologies that offer a blend of seamless functionality and refined ambiance.

A cornerstone of smart home technology in luxury interiors is the automated lighting system. Offering more than just the ability to turn lights on and off, these systems enable homeowners to program lighting to adjust according to the time of day or desired mood. A notable implementation is the inclusion of smart LED bulbs that can change color and brightness, creating the perfect atmosphere for any occasion. Carefully designed lighting not only illuminates but also complements and enhances the interior aesthetic.

The essence of luxury living is not just in its visual appeal but also in the comfort it offers. Advanced HVAC systems, controllable via smartphones or voice commands, have become a standard in Dallas's high-end homes. Such climate control technology ensures that indoor temperatures are maintained at optimal levels, adapting to the changing Texas seasons with ease and efficiency.

In the coming years, we can expect an evolution in the standards governing smart home technologies, geared towards enhancing interoperability among different devices and systems. The challenge of ensuring that diverse devices from various brands can communicate and work together smoothly is one that the industry is keen to address. This progression towards standardization will not only improve the user experience but also pave the way for more sophisticated integration of technology into luxury homes, where convenience and aesthetics are paramount.

The Challenge of Small Spaces in Dallas

In recent years, the Dallas area has seen a noticeable shift towards smaller living and retail spaces. As the city grows, the demand for housing in centrally located areas has led to a decrease in the average size of homes and commercial spaces. Whether driven by economic factors or a desire for a more minimalist lifestyle, this trend presents unique challenges for those looking to maintain a luxurious feel within their environments.

Homeowners and retailers in Dallas face the particular challenge of balancing functionality with aesthetic appeal. The constraint of limited square footage means every furniture choice and design element must serve a purpose, without compromising on the luxury and elegance that define their personal or brand identity. This balancing act requires a strategic approach to interior design, where every decision, from the layout to the choice of materials, plays a critical role in the overall feel of the space.

Strategic design becomes crucial in overcoming the limitations presented by small spaces. It’s not simply about choosing smaller furniture or decluttering; it’s about creating a cohesive design that enhances the sense of space while conveying luxury. Incorporating multifunctional furniture, smart storage solutions, and thoughtful color palettes can transform a cramped room into a chic and inviting space. Similarly, retailers can leverage innovative display techniques and scaled-down fixtures to showcase their merchandise without overwhelming the shopper.

It involves a careful consideration of space, light, and texture to create interiors that feel both expansive and intimate. For homeowners, it’s about making every square inch work harder, marrying form and function in a way that suits their lifestyle. Retailers, on the other hand, must craft immersive shopping experiences within their spatial constraints, ensuring that every element of their interior design speaks to their brand ethos and appeals to their target customers.

In Dallas, where the landscape of living and retail spaces is evolving, the challenge of maintaining luxury in smaller interiors is being met with creativity and innovation. Through strategic design, residents and business owners are finding ways to make the most of their compact environments, proving that luxury is not limited by square footage. It’s a testament to the idea that with the right approach, small spaces can indeed be transformed into elegant,

. The key lies in finding pieces that serve multiple functions without sacrificing style. For instance, a sleek, leather ottoman with hidden storage can add a luxurious touch while providing a place to keep blankets or books out of sight. Similarly, wall-mounted desks and drop-leaf tables offer a workspace that can be tucked away or expanded as needed, melding functionality with a modern aesthetic appeal.

Space-saving furniture pieces, like a chic Murphy bed or a sophisticated sofa bed, blend seamlessly into the decor during the day and transform living areas into comfortable bedrooms by night. These versatile solutions are perfect for Dallas apartments, where space is at a premium but style is not negotiable.

Lighting: The Illusionist of Space Design

Lighting is a powerful tool in creating the illusion of space. The strategic placement of light sources can make a small room feel open and airy. Skylights and large windows invite natural light, which is both practical and mood-enhancing, while mirrors placed opposite light sources can double the light in a room, making it appear larger. Incorporating various layers of lighting—from ambient and task to accent—ensures that spaces are not only functional but also imbued with an inviting atmosphere.

Tips for effective lighting include using adjustable lamps and installing dimmer switches, allowing the room's ambiance to be easily altered to suit the occasion, further enhancing the luxurious feel of small spaces in Dallas.

Selecting the right decor is crucial for adding a touch of luxury to compact areas without causing them to feel cluttered. One strategy is to choose a few high-quality statement pieces over several smaller items. A large, ornate mirror or a bold piece of artwork can draw the eye, creating a focal point that elevates the room’s overall aesthetic.

Harmony between color and texture creates an interior that feels both sumptuous and inviting, proving that even small spaces can encapsulate grandeur and elegance.

Dallas residents are embracing these multifunctional pieces, recognizing their ability to free up floor space while offering the flexibility to adapt to various needs throughout the day.

Understanding the role of color in interior design is crucial for creating spaces that are not only visually appealing but also evoke the desired emotional and psychological responses. Color theory, which explores the science and art behind color combinations and their impact, is a cornerstone of interior design, particularly in high-end spaces. The choice of colors can dramatically shift the ambiance of a room from cozy and intimate to open and airy, alluding to the underlying psychological effects colors have on individuals.

. Warm hues like reds and oranges are known to stimulate conversation and appetite, making them popular choices for dining areas. On the other hand, cool tones such as blues and greens evoke feelings of tranquility and relaxation, ideal for bedrooms and bathrooms. This understanding of color psychology is crucial in luxury interior design, where the objective often extends beyond mere aesthetics to create environments that resonate on an emotional level with those that are living amongst the spaces.

Beyond mood enhancement, color plays a pivotal role in giving a space its perceived value of luxury and exclusivity. High-end interior design frequently employs a specific palette of colors that are traditionally associated with sophistication and opulence. For instance, neutrals and metallic tones, when used thoughtfully, can convey a sense of understated elegance, while deep jewel tones can create an ambiance rich with luxury and depth. The real art lies in striking the right balance, ensuring that the use of color compliments the overall design vision without overwhelming it.

In designing luxurious interiors in Dallas, Texas, and its surrounding areas, a thoughtful consideration of color can significantly elevate the sophistication of a space. Whether it's through the strategic use of color to highlight architectural features or the careful selection of hues that align with the psychological needs of the home owners, the power of color in interior design cannot be underestimated. For anyone looking to infuse their home or retail space with a sense of luxury and exclusivity, a deep understanding of color theory and its practical applications is indispensable.

When it comes to designing luxury spaces, the color palette plays a pivotal role in establishing exclusivity and sophistication. Gold and silver, synonymous with wealth and opulence, are commonly incorporated through fixtures, finishes, or accent pieces, adding a touch of glam without overwhelming the senses. Deep blues and rich purples, on the other hand, convey a sense of depth and luxury, often used to create striking focal points or a calm, regal ambiance.

By combining luxurious hues with the right lighting, designers can manipulate spaces to appear more open, airy, and inviting. This combination of color and light plays a central role in crafting the sophisticated atmosphere indistinguishable with high-end interiors.

In Dallas, Texas, as in many places, color preferences in luxury spaces are often influenced by local culture and geographical context. Warm, earthy tones may reflect the regional landscape, offering a sense of familiarity and comfort, while incorporating vibrant, more saturated accents can pay homage to local heritage and artistry. Successful high-end designs in this area seamlessly blend these regional colors with the broader palette of luxury, creating spaces that are both cosmopolitan and uniquely Texan.

Practical Tips for Incorporating Color in High-End Spaces

Designing a luxury space is akin to creating an exquisite masterpiece, where color is one of the most powerful tools at your disposal. But how do you ensure that your color choices amplify the luxury rather than detract from it? Here are some expert strategies:

           Strategic Use of Color:

Choose a color that anchors your space and use it to guide your palette. Whether it's a deep blue to add depth or a rich purple to inject vibrancy, ensure this color complements the overall theme of luxury in your design.

           Layer Different Textures:

Colors come alive when paired with the right textures. Combine matte and glossy finishes or smooth and rough textures to create a dynamic interplay that enhances your selected hues.

           Lighting Makes a Difference:

The way a space is lit can dramatically affect how colors are perceived. Soft, warm lighting can make rich colors appear even more luxurious, while natural light can bring out the vibrancy in your accent hues.

This choice not only paid homage to the local landscape but also set the hotel apart, creating a luxurious and serene oasis in the bustling city.

The Influence of Texan Culture on Interior Design

Texas's rich cultural landscape, woven from varied historical events and the state's natural beauty, extends its influence far beyond traditional domains into the realm of luxury interior design. This fusion creates spaces that are distinctly Texan, yet undeniably luxurious and modern. The essence of Texan culture in interior design is encapsulated not just through aesthetic choices but also through a deep reverence for the state's history, local traditions, and the natural environment.

The historical significance of Texas, marked by stories of independence, diversity, and resilience, permeates into the design aesthetic of luxury homes and retail spaces in Dallas and its surrounding regions. This draws from a palette that respects the past while thriving in the present. Sophisticated design strategies are employed to reflect these narratives, creating interiors that are both elegant and steeped in Texan identity. For instance, the Alamo's influence can be subtly traced in the robust, yet refined architectural elements within luxury living spaces, balancing grandiosity with historical homage.

, inspire a lively yet sophisticated interior ambiance that caters to a luxurious lifestyle. Designers adeptly incorporate local motifs and symbols, such as longhorn sculptures or motifs inspired by the state's vast wildflower fields, to ensure the space remains authentically Texan without compromising on elegance. These elements are carefully balanced to enrich the interior's narrative, providing a unique cultural touch that enhances its luxury quotient.

Examples of iconic Texas symbols and motifs being utilized in high-end design abound. Leather finishes and cowhide rugs spell luxury while echoing the rustic charm of Texas ranch life. Meanwhile, modern interpretations of the Lone Star, whether in intricate tile work or as a statement piece hanging on a wall, lend a distinctively Texan flair to an otherwise contemporary design. These symbols, when integrated with thoughtful planning and high-quality materials, contribute to creating spaces that are not just luxurious but imbued with a sense of place and history.

Thus, the integration of Texas culture into interior design in Dallas and its vicinity is not merely about visual appeal. It is about crafting experiences and spaces that celebrate the state's rich heritage, local traditions, and the unique Texan spirit. This careful balancing act ensures that luxury homes and retail environments not only dazzle with their elegance but also resonate with the warmth and grandeur of Texas.

The integration of art into luxury interior design in Texas goes beyond decoration—it's a tribute to the state's vibrant art scene and a manifestation of cultural prestige. Dallas, in particular, has become a hub for artists whose work is as diverse as Texas itself. From contemporary painters like Jeremy Smith, whose abstract landscapes capture the Texan spirit, to sculptors such as Maria V. Howard, whose bronze works echo the state’s historical narratives, local artists are contributing significantly to defining luxury spaces.

across Texas play a crucial role in this integration by fostering a dialogue between artists and interior designers. Spaces like the Dallas Art Museum not only exhibit works by Texas artists but also host events and workshops aimed at exploring the synergy between art and interior design. This collaboration ensures that luxury spaces not only display art but also embody it, creating environments where every piece tells a story, anchored in Texan heritage.

Incorporating Texan art without compromising modern aesthetics requires a delicate balance. Designers often opt for minimalist frames or neutral walls that foreground the art, ensuring it enhances rather than overwhelms the space. The key is in selecting pieces that resonate with the overall design narrative, creating a seamless integration that celebrates Texan culture in a contemporary context.

Embracing Spaciousness: A Nod to Texan Grandeur

The vast landscapes of Texas inspire an architectural ethos where space is not just a luxury but a tribute to Texan grandeur. Luxury interiors often feature open, airy layouts that echo the state’s expansive vistas. High ceilings, large windows, and open-plan designs are hallmarks, creating a sense of freedom and space that is quintessentially Texan.

For smaller spaces, designers employ strategies such as mirrored walls or streamlined furniture arrangements to create the illusion of spaciousness. Lighting plays a crucial role, with strategically placed fixtures and natural light sources enhancing the openness of the design.

Comparing traditional Texas ranch-style layouts to contemporary luxury designs reveals a fascinating evolution. While modern designs may lean towards sleeker lines and minimalist aesthetics, they still carry the essence of Texas’s open spaces. The fusion of traditional spaciousness with contemporary design principles exemplifies how Texas’s architectural heritage continues to influence luxury interiors.

Utilizing Native Materials in High-End Designs

Incorporating materials native to Texas, such as limestone, clay, and reclaimed wood, into luxury interior design is both an aesthetic choice and a nod to environmental sustainability. These materials not only provide a tactile connection to the Texan landscape but also contribute to creating spaces that are inherently energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

Designers are increasingly turning to local sources for materials, ensuring that the luxury spaces they create are not just beautiful but also bear the marks of Texan authenticity. Cases in point include Dallas homes that feature limestone exteriors and interiors accented with native wood, creating a seamless blend of luxury and locality.

The use of native materials in high-end designs is more than a trend—it's a testament to the enduring allure of Texas’s natural landscape and its influence on luxury interior design. Through thoughtful integration of locally sourced materials, designers are crafting spaces that are not just luxurious but uniquely Texan, offering a sense of place and a deeper connection to the state's cultural and environmental heritage.

Challenges and Controversies in Combining Tradition with Modern Luxury

The marriage of Texan tradition with modern luxury interior design is not without its challenges. Achieving the perfect balance between paying homage to Texas's rich cultural heritage and embracing contemporary design trends is a delicate endeavor. Some purists argue that modern design elements could dilute traditional Texan aesthetics, while others see the fusion as an evolution of the state's design ethos.

Several case studies from Dallas and surrounding areas have sparked debates on this balance. For instance, a high-end retail space in Uptown Dallas creatively integrated modern European furniture within a space defined by rugged Texan architectural elements. The result was polarizing, lauded by some for its bold blend of styles but critiqued by others for muddying Texan authenticity.

The future of Texan-inspired luxury interior design looks to be as vast and vibrant as the state itself. With newfound technologies and the rise of sustainable design practices, designers are on the cusp of creating interiors that not only reflect Texan culture but also embody global design trends. The use of smart home technology, for example, is beginning to take root in luxury Texas homes, offering convenience without sacrificing style.

Emerging materials and artistic movements also play a significant role in shaping future trends. The incorporation of advanced, eco-friendly materials that carry the essence of Texas’s natural beauty offers a new avenue for designers to explore. The resurgence of interest in artisan crafts is promoting a unique blend of the traditional with the contemporary, as seen in spaces that highlight bespoke Texan craftsmanship alongside modern design elements.

Local designers, including pioneers like Arbuckle & Co., are at the forefront of this evolution. Their work exemplifies how embracing innovation can enhance the Texan narrative within luxury interiors. From utilizing cutting-edge 3D printing techniques to create custom fixtures inspired by Texas’s wildlife to integrating AI-driven climate control systems that echo the state’s commitment to sustainability, these designers are redefining what Texan luxury means.

As we look to the future, it is clear that the essence of Texas will continue to be a cornerstone of luxury interior design, not just within the state but as an influential force worldwide. The blend of Texan tradition with modern luxury is not just about creating spaces that are aesthetically pleasing but rather about curating environments that tell a story. A story of a place rooted in rich history and traditions, yet always looking forward, always evolving. The challenge for designers is to keep this story alive, ensuring that the spirit of Texas remains palpable in every space they create.

HOW TO DEFINE YOUR (interior design) STYLE!

Have you ever thought “what is my style”? I don’t even know what direction
to go in design wise. This blog might help to shed some light on clues that
are all around you.

YOU HAD ME AT HELLO! We all have seen and love Jerry Maguire, right!? When Tom Cruise walks in and confesses to Renee Zellweger why he needs her in his life and he goes through his speech only for Zellweger to exclaim - “you had me at hello”. Well, design in many ways is like that too! We find something that resonates with us, and we are just… well, smitten. This post will be to talk about that zing or spark we get when we find that special someone… or errrmm… something.

So many people/clients struggle with defining their style. As designers, we see it often when we talk to you - the client - about what you like, LOVE, and what you can’t live without. But surprisingly… you may not know. And that’s okay too. It’s our job, as designers, to be like mini investigators. We pick up on so many Q’s in your home, your fashion style, and maybe it’s even in how you live. Maybe you didn’t realize you couldn’t live another day without a full-on coffee bar in your newly renovated kitchen. But we knew because of your schedule, your lifestyle,… and well… maybe everytime we see you, you have a venti something or other in your hand. Or if you’re me, a Sunnyvale Latte from Hope Coffee.

Inspiration can come in so many forms. If you’re thinking about redoing a space in your home, whether it’s the kitchen or master bedroom, start paying attention to why you gravitate to the same things:

As designers - these notes are extremely helpful. Grab a pen and paper…. or just pin them on your Pinterest - but find a way to dog ear these moments, so when you do get to that point in your life where you are ready to invest in the perfect space for your family, you have a treasure trove of goodies we get to go through with you. When we get to tell you, “you had me at hello”.

SETTING A BUDGET (and why it’s important)

Setting a design budget is really important in the overall success of a
project. Here are some tips and tricks to figuring out how and where to
start the conversation.

Budget realization is a tough pill to swallow for some clients - but it doesn’t have to be. Many people shy away from hiring interior designers because they worry they are too expensive. At the end of the day it’s important for you to know that having a designer isn’t a luxury but in many cases essential to the success and finished product of the space. Sticker shock often drives projects askew and can create a ripple effect in the relationship you have with your designer. This post will be to explain some of these nuances and how to navigate through a project.

So first, let’s be honest! REAL honest! Everyone has a different level of expectation from their designer. What you want/need will vary along with your taste of what you consider to be of luxury or quality. Let me break this down to fashion. For some, a pair of Christian Louboutin heels (the ones with the red bottoms) are considered to be their favorite pair of dressy shoes - with a sticker price of $3K in some cases. For others, maybe it’s going to DSW and seeing what the latest season brought in and you find the perfect pair for $60. Obviously, there is a drastic difference - but they both have a pair of heels that they love.

Believe it or not, this is the same with purchasing furniture and setting your budget. In the end you will have a room you love - but we need to know where your headspace is. Let me use a sofa as a perfect example. You can order a custom sofa that is made in the USA, that is hand knotted, with down fill, and beautifully selected fabric that will take 24 weeks (yes you read that right) to receive. This piece could run you anywhere between $8K-$30K - and no I’m not exaggerating. And yet, you can also go to Pottery Barn or Bassett Furniture and purchase a $3K-$5K sofa that is still high quality. Both options still give you a sofa that you’ll love. With that said - as your designer, we need to know where your head is at in terms of cost, so when we go to the drawing board, we know and understand what your budget is. We don’t want you to have sticker shock. We also don’t want you to feel like you need to walk away from the project because it was more than what you wanted to spend, only for you to rewind ALL the research and create a DO OVER for yourself.

Also, there are perks that are maybe unknown to the general public. In the above mentioned, I used “retail” brands to give you a frame of reference. Pottery Barn, Louboutin, and even DSW are nationally known brands that everyone can immediately understand. But, what I - as well as most designers - have is a relationship with “trade” vendors - aka the manufacturer. Therefore, I’m going to the original source to purchase your furniture, lighting, and accessories. That means we eliminate the middle man, and get much better pricing. Often times part of those savings get passed onto you, saving you $$$ big bucks! And in many ways - your savings help cover the Flat Rate Fee for some of the work on the project.

So in beginning a project, we will have a conversation up front that will clearly define not only what my Flat Rate will be (based off the scope of the project) but also, where you stand with your “not to exceed” budget. This is where you would feel most comfortable in creating your finished room. There is truly a pair of heels for everyone - and - a finished room. But you need to be honest with yourself - and have this conversation with your spouse. Be on the same page with what the budget looks like. And, be up front with your designer. We need to know what you’re thinking and having great communication is key in building that client/designer relationship.

Be realistic! No we can’t wave a magic wand and give you a full room makeover with all new furniture for $1K. And no you won’t get a brand new kitchen for $5K. Put some pencil to paper and think about all the aspects to giving a room a refresh, remodel, or new construction. If you need help coming up with a number, we are more than happy to help - but it’s still good to have a ball park figure in mind when approaching a project.

Last but not least, I want to break down some costs associated with a potential project that will help you:

All projects will involve Bullet 1 - Flat Rate Design Fee. But they will also dip into Bullet 2 or 3… and maybe both in some instances. But the important part is to think about how we get from point A to point Z when coming to the realization that a budget needs to be honest.

Last but not least - trust! There will be a future post on this very topic, but you have to trust your designer! You need to know we have your best interest in mind and that we will do everything in our power to make it a seamless transition, and give you the home you’ve always dreamt of having.

The HGTV Myth has been long standing and has cast a cloud of confusion amongst all watchers! If you’re a designer… you know exactly what I mean. To everyone else - the Myth is this: Rock music ensues, everything gets demolished, and TA-DA a magic wand gets waved and a new room stands before you. This post will be to dispel some of those major misconceptions and to clarify what our role truly looks like… in well… the real world.

The first thing I’d like to address is the illusion of time. Occasionally shows will vaguely mention “x” number of weeks from start to finish but with flashy production and editing it seems to happen overnight. One thing that is commonly asked amongst the design community is how long something will take? Granted, this is not a cookie cutter answer. Of course if you are having any form of structural work done - this adds weeks and potentially months. But let’s pause here for a second. The above mentioned almost seems obvious, right? You’re having your kitchen redone, it’s to be expected that this take months. But let’s say you’re giving your living room a makeover, and you want new furniture. Seems simple. If purchasing custom, this can take months - and months - and well… months. These pieces are usually made from scratch - down to the frame. And, it is our role as designers to communicate the expectations to you early on in the process, so you aren’t expecting some rock song and a miracle.

Secondly, another common - HUGE misconception that HGTV has blessed us designers with is that we swing hammers, and install tile - and boss around the General Contractor. News flash - none of this is true. Well, for a majority of us. Yes we work in tandem with a GC and in some ways will act as a project manager. But we are not their boss. And you won’t see us there on demo day ripping out a counter and kicking down a wall. That’s what the contractor is hired for. Interior Designers have a multitude of things that occupy our day, to ensure your project stays on track and that your home is beautiful.

Lastly, HGTV reveal day! When the client walks in, and they’re in awe of everything - and comment on all the details throughout the home. “OMG - that backsplash is amazing”. Girl, you know you’ve seen that tile before! Yes, I get it… there is probably some level of surprise seeing the finished product all styled with perfect lighting. But HGTV has also done a good job of excluding any meeting or preview (between client and designer) of the items that go into your home. Again a massive misconception. Not only will you get a preview of every furniture piece that will go into your home, but in some cases you will sit on the pieces as well. And you will have visited the stone yard to pick out your counters along with the plumbing fixtures and tile. What I aim to say - is there are no surprises, at least where the finishes are concerned. Yes, depending on your client and the specifications of that project, there still might be a big reveal moment, and your jaw drops. But this is definitely circumstantial.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for ALL the shows on HGTV and have binge watched literally hours of design. But, there are elements that needed clarifying. Things take time - (usually quite a bit of it), and trust me - it’s worth the wait. And, your designer makes sure they navigate the logistics of your room and that you have your OMG moment. And hey, if you want rock music playing in the background, I’ll bring my boombox!

Trend vs. not trend

Trend vs. Not Trend

To trend or not to trend, that is the question? What exactly is a trend you ask - well, the boring - not so exciting answer is, it started in the world of economics and the stock market. When trends could literally be seen in how specific markets would improve by the spike or curvature of the market. But, we all know that’s not what it means today. It’s safe to say that a majority of people, in hearing the word “trend” think of fashion and design. This post will discuss whether or not we should “trend vs. not trend”.

Initially, in going down this rabbit hole, trends have always seemed a little trite. Which is odd, right. Trite is almost the exact opposite of Trend. How can they both be the same?! Having been an interior designer for 20-ish years this is something that gets brought up every single new year. What’s the top Pantone color of the year? What is trending in home design? White cabinets are out, no more white counter tops, no more brass, no more - no more - no more. But realistically, who can keep up? Who remodels/redesigns their home every year? News flash - NO ONE. True redesign happens about once every 10 years. And for most, in stages. So, with that said, this is where my conundrum pops up… does this not make “trends” a moot point?

We all remember, or at least know, there were trends in each era - the 50’s had lots of metal finishes, with curves and MCM. And who can deny the tile colors of this time. Pepto Bismol pink and avacado green bathrooms galore! Or the 70’s with ALL THE BROWN and shag carpets! So groovy! Then my childhood, the 80’s with peach and teal in splashes of weirdness on fabric, artwork, and yes - even our clothes. Ew. Here we are now, in 2024, and yet again the tides are changing, so they say. Shouldn’t we all just live in a home that resonates with us. A home that gives us ease, that functions in a way that makes our life easier, that is of course gorge!, and that tells our story.

At the end of the day, I don’t actually hate trends and I understand why they exist. Everyone wants to keep up with the jones’, but you should do exactly what you want! Don’t be apprehensive to paint a room in a jewel tone or to do green kitchen cabinets. Stop thinking about resale value and washing your home in gray everything. I think this is a trend we can all say we are OVER. (Of course unless you are trying to sell your home but that will be a future post). For this year, the color of the year, is Peach Fuzz… and I don’t hate it. It’s actually beautiful and refreshing to see a color that heralds a time from my childhood - that is modernized and made new again. Long story short - trend or not trend - you decide - but don’t make your decision based off of a report - make it because you love it!
