Trend vs. not trend

To trend or not to trend, that is the question? What exactly is a trend you ask - well, the boring - not so exciting answer is, it started in the world of economics and the stock market. When trends could literally be seen in how specific markets would improve by the spike or curvature of the market. But, we all know that’s not what it means today. It’s safe to say that a majority of people, in hearing the word “trend” think of fashion and design. This post will discuss whether or not we should “trend vs. not trend”.

Initially, in going down this rabbit hole, trends have always seemed a little trite. Which is odd, right. Trite is almost the exact opposite of Trend. How can they both be the same?! Having been an interior designer for 20-ish years this is something that gets brought up every single new year. What’s the top Pantone color of the year? What is trending in home design? White cabinets are out, no more white counter tops, no more brass, no more - no more - no more. But realistically, who can keep up? Who remodels/redesigns their home every year? News flash - NO ONE. True redesign happens about once every 10 years. And for most, in stages. So, with that said, this is where my conundrum pops up… does this not make “trends” a moot point?

We all remember, or at least know, there were trends in each era - the 50’s had lots of metal finishes, with curves and MCM. And who can deny the tile colors of this time. Pepto Bismol pink and avacado green bathrooms galore! Or the 70’s with ALL THE BROWN and shag carpets! So groovy! Then my childhood, the 80’s with peach and teal in splashes of weirdness on fabric, artwork, and yes - even our clothes. Ew. Here we are now, in 2024, and yet again the tides are changing, so they say. Shouldn’t we all just live in a home that resonates with us. A home that gives us ease, that functions in a way that makes our life easier, that is of course gorge!, and that tells our story.

At the end of the day, I don’t actually hate trends and I understand why they exist. Everyone wants to keep up with the jones’, but you should do exactly what you want! Don’t be apprehensive to paint a room in a jewel tone or to do green kitchen cabinets. Stop thinking about resale value and washing your home in gray everything. I think this is a trend we can all say we are OVER. (Of course unless you are trying to sell your home but that will be a future post). For this year, the color of the year, is Peach Fuzz… and I don’t hate it. It’s actually beautiful and refreshing to see a color that heralds a time from my childhood - that is modernized and made new again. Long story short - trend or not trend - you decide - but don’t make your decision based off of a report - make it because you love it!
